Youth engagement, social trust & the future of democracy

Dr. Constance Flanagan

Nov., 2008

Social trust reflects our faith in humanity—our belief that people, in general, are fair and trustworthy. This belief is vital to democracy because people who have faith in others are more likely to pitch in for the common good—to volunteer in their communities, vote in elections, and help others in need.

This 90-minute video presentation focuses on the role of youth engagement in nurturing social trust in younger generations and in fostering the future of democracy.

At the end of this presentation, a panel discusses and comments on Flanagan's ideas. This panel consists of:

  • Tom Miller, Program Officer, Children and Families Department at the McKnight Foundation
  • Carol Thomas, Supervisor of Safe and Healthy Learners, Minnesota Department of Education
  • Jodi Dworkin, Assistant Professor Dept of Family Social Science U of MN
