Urban 4-H Youth Development

Internships & volunteering | Programs/clubs | Events | Signature Curricula

As part of Minnesota 4-H, Urban 4-H serves youth living in Minneapolis, St. Paul, and communities in Hennepin and Ramsey counties. Urban 4-H programs are based on research findings and best practices for urban youth and young people living in at-risk conditions. Youth can participate through clubs and after-school programs.

We partner with other youth-serving organizations to build sustainable programs that meet the unique needs of urban youth. Our partners receive access to University of Minnesota resources such as volunteers, curriculum, program assessment and support, professional development and the possibility of 4-H Foundation funding.

To find out about 4-H anywhere in Hennepin or Ramsey County, contact Becky at urbanyd@umn.edu or phone 1-612-624-7626.

Intern Spotlight

Daniel Garrison
Dan is in his last year at the University of Minnesota student studying Political Science and German. He brings a wealth of experience as a youth worker, mentor, tutor, and volunteer in many school and community settings. This includes his experience as an AmeriCorps Vista last summer with Project for Pride in Living and CommonBond Communities, as well as completing student teaching observations at Roseville Area High School last fall. In January, Dan began leading the Fun with Fitness 4-H club at Jackson School in St. Paul and also started a new 4-H science and gardening club at Highland Middle School through a partnership with the University’s Bell Museum and science teachers at the school. We are excited to have Dan join our team!

A message from the Urban Youth Development office

During this season of reflection on the past and planning for the upcoming year, we would like to take this moment to thank all the youth and adults who participated in 4-H programming in 2011.

We are only as strong as we are united,
as weak as we are divided.

This sentiment (which you may recognize from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) struck us as relevant to 4-H, our country and our world in the coming year. It also reflects the values of Minnesotans and 4-H’ers. We are only successful in creating the 4-H of our dreams if we all work together.
We appreciate all of your work. We cannot create the best 4-H experience without the help of amazing volunteers like you. We hope you are as inspired as we are by the growth and strength of our 4-H youth and program. In this moment when we are considering the possibilities of what could be, please commit to partnering with us in 2012 to make the best better.
A few extra hours during the year can make a difference! Volunteering at the County Fair, organizing a project day or assisting in the office can have a great impact. We are also initiating new opportunities this year for parent involvement. We want to hear from you! Groups that may form in 2012 include: Club quality, Showcase advisory committee, and science PDC.
Contact us today at urbanyd@umn.edu or (612) 624-7626 to help us create a stronger 4-H for our clubs, communities, country and world.
