Shooting sports & wildlife leader certification

In order to run a county or multi-county shooting sports & wildlife program, instructors must be certified by Minnesota 4-H. The leader certification trainings are designed to cover the needed knowledge and rules to become a certified 4-H county instructor.

Learn more about the Iowa 4-H Certification Training

For additional information about this training, please contact Donise Petersen (Donise.Petersen@dnr.iowa.gov or 515-205-8709). Minnesota 4-H volunteers are able to attend this training and receive certification. Please let Nicole Pokorney know if this option is more convenient for you.

Who can attend?

4-H youth leaders and adult 4-H volunteers. All youth must be a part of a 4-H club program and all adults must be county-screened 4-H volunteers before participating in this certification training. County or regional Extension offices are responsible for recruiting participants for the shooting sports & wildlife leaders certification training.

What will I do at leader certification training?

The training covers life skills, state regulations, and skills needed for each of the discipline(s) being offered. Participants will be certified in only one discipline per training event. They will also learn to train or teach others through a cross-training experience.

Get involved!

Has your county ever considered hosting a shooting sports/wildlife leader training? Do you have an interest in hosting an event within the next year? Would you like to host one close to your county so your volunteers could get trained close to home? If you answered yes to any of those questions, please read on!

There are several opportunities for shooting sports/wildlife leader trainings and we are looking for host sites throughout Minnesota. It would involve a weekend (typically a Friday night through Sunday noon, for a total of 20 hours of training time) in which leaders come and get training in a specific discipline.

We would like to plan these trainings and put dates on the calendar, so you can advertise them to leaders, and so the trainers can plan for these upcoming events. If you would have an interest in hosting a shooting sports/wildlife leader training, please contact Kia Harries or call 1-507-372-3908 for more information on hosting requirements, such as accommodations and meal planning. If you are ready to volunteer, fill out a hosting request form and we will coordinate with you on dates.
