Financial Security in Later Life

Won't someone else pay if I need long term care?

Marlene S. Stum, Ph.D. Family Social Science

There is no comprehensive government program in the United States for financing long term care.

In the US, long term care is financed through a patchwork of public programs (predominately Medicaid and Medicare), out-of-pockets payment by individuals and families, private insurance and other private sources. To get an idea of the breakdown of who's paying for long term care, consider the following graph that shows the percentage of expenditures for nursing home and home health care by source of payment.
